WE G39C (G36)
by Moondog

HISTORY
The G36 is a 5.56mm assault rifle created by Heckler and Koch for the German Bundeswehr (army), replacing their venerable 7.62mm G3 battle rifle, in 1997. The G36C (C for compact or commando) is the shortest variant optimized for CQB.

The design of the G36 borrows heavily from the polymer bodied Styer AUG and from the SIG 550's receiver and magazine. The G36 in turn inspired the Magpull Masada's design and was the basis for the US Army's canceled XM8.

PACKAGING
The rifle comes in a plain cardboard box with a WE G39C sticker on it. I assume WE calls it the G39 instead of a G36 in hopes of avoiding trademark issues. Whatever, for this review I’ll refer to it as the G36. Inside the box is the rifle, a manual (in Chinese), a tube speed loader and a 30rnd magazine.

FORM and FUCTION
The WE G36C is an accurate replica of the real steel, down to the body pins (which fit in the holes in the stock) and realistic take down. My only peev is the cheap looking sticker where the H&K trades should be.

WE includes a full set of picatinny rails on the sides and below the foregrip for accessories. The polymer body closely imitates the real G36's dark graphite color instead of the shiny black found in the JG or Tokyo Marui G36's.

Where this gun and all GBBR shine is in how it feels when fired. The bolt stays open when the mag is empty and it has a functioning bolt release above the trigger. In semi the blowback is crisp and in full auto it's teeth chattering. No AEG, not even a $1500 Systema comes close.

Early videos of the WE G36 had guns firing dangerously over 400fps but our gun in 80ºF weather was firing in the 300-380 range using green gas. Either WE adjusted the gas system for the US market or those videos for done in much warmer weather. Like all gas guns, the FPS, range and accuracy will vary due to temperature of the magazine.

The hop up is adjustable and very effective. It has a similar ring style adjustment as the AEG though accessed via the top of the recover in the bolt channel rather than the ejector port. It's a bit difficult to access with your finger and a pen or thin tool is recommended to turn the dial.

CONCLUSIONS
If you're looking for a realism, the WE G36C is the closest you'll come to firing real steel in airsoft. In fact it's so much fun, you may become tempted to sell off all of your AEGs. And you may need to, because the mags cost over $40 each and only hold 30 rounds so you'll need to carry a lot for a scenario OPs (that's realism for you.) And like all GBB there are other drawbacks such as cold weather and the headaches of leaky mags (including the mag that came with this gan). WE, please work on your quality control, I should NOT have to replace a valve right out of the box.)

But despite all that, this is an must have rifle. At $230, it's about the same price as the AEG version (made by ARES for Umarex) and so much more fun to fire.
